Our 5 Favorite Coffee Shops in Downtown Asheville

Asheville may be known for its craft beer and outdoor adventure, but rest assured it has some strong coffee game as well.  There is no shortage of decent coffee shops downtown, and it is not hard to find a great cup of coffee, cappuccino, latte etc… but each spot has its own distinct atmosphere and flavor (no pun intended), so there truly is something for everyone.  Asheville loves locally owned and locally sourced businesses and the coffee world is no different. There’s no need to locate a national chain to find a consistently great cup.  Of all the shops in town, here are our top pics for downtown Asheville’s best coffee shops.

High Five Coffee
13 Rankin Ave
Asheville, NC 28801

Off the main drag and tucked into a small storefront on Rankin St in Asheville, is High Five Coffee. With 3 locations in Asheville, High Five on Rankin Ave. serves Counter Culture coffee and locally procured pastries and edibles. Previously owned and operated as the Dripolator Coffee House, High Five has become a fixture in Asheville for coffee lovers and people looking for a quiet spot to caffeinate and work on their computers. Try the Cubano, it’s one of the best things on the planet.

Liberty House Café
221 S. Liberty St.
Asheville, NC 28801

A somewhat newer addition to Asheville’s coffee scene, Liberty House Coffee serves up delicious craft made coffee drinks and local eats. Named after its unassuming location on Liberty Street and built into a 1920’s bungalow, most people would drive by and never notice its understated appearance, were it not for all the cars parked out front. Sit on one of their patios and enjoy a quiet morning by sipping coffee, looking out over the community garden or enjoying some quiet time alone. In addition to great coffee drinks, they have a kitchen that serves fantastic food. It’s tough to beat the breakfast tacos accompanied by their daily coffee specials.

Izzy’s Coffee Den
74 N. Lexington Ave
Asheville, NC 28801

One of Asheville’s most popular and established coffee shops, Izzy’s is located on busy North Lexington Ave, right by Mela Indian restaurant and Dobra Tea House. Izzy’s is not quite as luxurious or upscale as the others on this but it is a fixture of downtown Asheville, and a great spot to find locals in their native caffeine consuming habitat. They’ve recently opened a new location on Haywood Rd in West Asheville in the building that used to be owned and occupied by the infamous Waking Life coffee house. Izzy’s brews Counter Culture, Stumptown, Mountain Air, and Blanchards Coffee and they make a mighty fine shot in the dark.

Old Europe Pastries
13 Broadway
Asheville, NC 28801

While more of a pastry shop than a coffee bar, Old Europe Pastries has been serving Asheville since 1994, and pulls a very nice cup of espresso. Their tiny café serves up wonderful house-made delicacies like their “Hazelnut Napoleon” and amazing “French Creamy” dessert. Recently they’ve moved from their location on Battery Park, where they have been since the 90’s, to their new location on Broadway, across from the new AC Hotel. Stepping inside Old Europe is a bit like stepping back in time, and it’s nice interlude to a busy day. There isn’t a ton of seating inside, so plan to take your coffee to go unless there’s a spot at one of their two small tables outside.

Penny Cup Coffee Co.
39 Market St.
Asheville, NC 28801

A relative newcomer to the Asheville coffee house scene, Penny Cup is tucked into the quiet neighborhood near the corner of Eagle St. and Market St, behind the Fine Arts Theatre, and around the corner from Limones Restaurant. I’ve driven past it a couple of times before I noticed they were there, which I’ve learned to view as a positive thing in Asheville. Penny Cup is maybe the only coffee shop in town that roasts their own beans in-house, giving them a greater degree of control over the finished product. We love the small batch feel and artisanal nature of Penny Cup, and pretty much everything they brew or pull is great.
