Asheville’s 5 Best Taco Shops (Taquerias)

God bless the taco.  Seriously. In the age of rapidly increasing food costs, taquerias are one of the last few places you can grab a quick cheap lunch that delivers plenty of nutrition and is packed with flavor. This list omits a couple of Asheville’s more authentic taquerias, in favor of places that are more “Asheville” in their culinary approach, meaning that they blend the traditional with the adventurous and unique. I love all the places on this list, and some of them are pushing the boundaries of what’s acceptable to serve in a tortilla, but if you want recommendations for the “real deal” authentic taquerias that will blow your mind, drop us a message. We keep that information on a need to know basis!

Taco Billy
201 Haywood Rd
Asheville, NC 28806

Inconspicuously located by the corner of Haywood Rd and Clingman Ave in West Asheville, Taco Billy is a quaint little taco joint nestled in a small multi-use building. If you’re not looking for it, you could drive past it a handful of times without ever noticing. Featuring high-quality local ingredients like Brasstown Beef and tortillas from Woodfins Tortilleria Molinera, Taco Billy serves up some delicious fare. One thing that sets them apart is their breakfast taco menu. Try the “Mama’s favorite” for breakfast, and come back at lunch for the “kirb service” taco.

121 Biltmore Ave
Asheville, NC 28801

Just a stone’s throw from Asheville’s famous music venue The Orange Peel is BarTaco, one of the newer additions to Asheville’s foodie scene. Bar Taco has locations in 8 states but feels very “Asheville” when you step inside its newly renovated location, which used to be a service station. With taco offerings like Tamarind Duck, Sesame Ribeye and Pork Belly, I think we can all agree this is not the place to seek an authentic taco experience. But, Bar Taco has quickly gotten a reputation for its delicious and adventurous menu. Additionally, its open late (midnight during the week and 1 am on Friday and Saturday) making it a great choice for an end of the evening snack after a concert at the Orange Peel, or at the tail end of a night out on the town.

Taco Temple
132 Charlotte St
Asheville, NC 28801

Another relative newcomer, Taco Temple (owned by Asheville’s Mexican restaurant fixture Mamacitas), opened shop on Charlotte St. and has been slammed since day one. They offer counter service and churn out plates quickly, so it’s a great choice for a lunch on the go. We love their pastor and borracho chicken tacos. They come with a side salad of crisp fresh veggies and the food is excellent. Because it’s quick and close to our office, Taco Temple has become a “go to” for our firm’s vast and regular taco requirements.

Zia Taqueria
521 Haywood Rd.
Asheville, NC 28806

West Asheville’s Zia Taqueria is a great place to gather with friends for tacos, drinks, and a relaxed atmosphere. They have a nice amount of space including a great outdoor patio and free parking. The staff is helpful and friendly, and they have a great bar and draft beer list. Try the Huevos Rancheros for Brunch, or one of their traditional plates, which comes with a choice of their delicious side dishes. I’m partial to the Mexican corn basted in red chile butter and topped with queso fresco.

White Duck Taco Shop
1 Roberts St.
Asheville, NC 28801

White Duck has 3 Asheville locations now, due to the overwhelming success of their first restaurant in Asheville, located in the River Arts district. Most days there’s a line out the door on weekdays, giving people a pretty good sense of how tasty their food is. I love the Korean Beef Bulgogi taco, the Duck with Mole, and the Spicy Buffalo chicken. The coconut macaroon pie with salted caramel doesn’t look half bad either. Time for more research it seems!
